Former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping suffered his second stoppage loss in just three weeks at last weekend’s UFC event in Shanghai, China.
After being put to sleep by Georges St-Pierre in the main event of UFC 217 on November 4, “The Count” decided to make a quick turnaround and accepted a short-notice fight with Kelvin Gastelum for November 25.
Unfortunately for Bisping, his fight with Gastelum did not go as planned. Kelvin caught Michael with a massive left hand in the early moments of round one which sent Bisping crashing to the canvas. Gastelum would then proceed to unleash some brutal ground and pound which forced the referee to step in and stop the contest.
While many fighters applauded Bisping for taking the short notice fight with Gastelum, there were others who disagreed with the decision.
Recently retired ONE Championship welterweight title holder Ben Askren put the UFC on blast for allowing “a concussed” Bisping to make such a quick turnaround.
Most recently, Michael Bisping’s bitter rival Yoel Romero spoke with BJPENN.com’s Chris Taylor where he criticized the bold move.
“You know, I think it is just so crazy. He came back just after just a couple of weeks. He got hurt badly in that fight with St-Pierre and ended up being put to sleep. Normally, the commission and doctors won’t allow a fighter to come back so soon after a fight like that. He came back after three weeks! That is just crazy I think.”
Romero was quick to point the finger at Bisping’s coaching staff who he believes should have advised “The Count” against making such a quick turnaround.
“Bisping’s team should have told him not to take that fight. For the sake of his family. He should have been thinking about his family. They (his team) should have told him not to fight and pointed at his family. The question really is why did his team allow him to fight. They should have said no. It is my humble opinion that he should have not come back so fast.”
Following his loss to Gastelum, Michael Bisping announced that he still plans to have one last fight when the promotion returns to London in March of 2018.
Do you think we will finally see a scrap between Yoel Romero and Michael Bisping this March?
