Gustafsson to get next shot at newly crowned champ Cormier‏

Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson (16-3 MMA) will be the next man to challenge newly crowned UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier (16-1 MMA) for the title.

UFC President Dana White stated the promotions intensions yesterday evening on “UFC Tonight.”

No date or venue has been announced for the “Gustafsson vs. Cormier” title fight as of this time.

Alexander Gustafsson was last seen in action at January’s UFC on FOX 14 event in Sweden, where he suffered a first-round TKO loss to Anthony Johnson. Prior to the loss, “The Mauler” was coming off a second-round TKO victory over Jimi Manuwa, which he earned in March of 2014.

Gustafsson has already fought for the UFC’s light heavyweight strap on one occasion, suffering a hard-fought unanimous decision loss to former title holder Jon “Bones” Jones at UFC 165 in September of 2013.

Meanwhile, Daniel Cormier earned the vacant UFC light heavyweight championship this past month by submitting Anthony Johnson in the third-round of their main event title fight at UFC 187. Prior to the title earning win, “DC” had suffered a lop-sided unanimous decision loss to former division kingpin Jon “Bones” Jones at January’s UFC 182 event in Vegas.

The news will serve as a disappointment to fellow 205-pound contender Ryan “Darth” Bader (19-4 MMA), who is currently riding a four-fight win streak and was hopeful to get the nod from the UFC as the next light heavyweight title challenger.

Gustafsson out of Teixeira fight, Jedrzejczyk vs. Penne now headlines UFC Fight Night 69‏

The injury bug has struck again!

This time it’s June’s UFC Fight Night 69 event headliner that has taken the hit.

UFC officials announced today that Alexander Gustaffson has been forced out of his scheduled main event bout with former title challenger Glover Teixeira.

No word yet if a replacement opponent will be sought for Teixeira to keep him on the card in Berlin.

UFC officials did not give any additional information regarding Gustafsson’s injury.

A strawweight title fight featuring current champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk (9-0 MMA) taking on challenger Jessica Penne (12-2 MMA) will now headline the card.

Jedrzejczyk will make her first title defense since defeating inaugural strawweight champion Carla Esparza via second-round TKO at March’s UFC 185 event in Dallas. The 27-year-old Polish fighter has gone a perfect 9-0 in her young MMA career, which includes 4 stoppage wins to her credit.

Meanwhile, Jessica Penne was most recently seen in action at December’s TUF 20 Finale event, where she scored a hard-fought split-decision win over Randa Markos. Prior to her victory over Markos, Penne suffered a decision loss to Carla Esparza in the semifinal of Season 20 of “The Ultimate Fighter”.

UFC Fight Night 69 takes place June 20 live from the O2 World Berlin in Germany’s capital city. The entire event streams on UFC Fight Pass.

Report: Gustafsson vs. Teixeira targeted for UFC Fight Night 69

By: Chris Taylor (Kalapaki Joe’s Staff Writer)

A key light heavyweight battle is being targeted for June’s ‘UFC Fight Night 69’ event in Berlin, as Swedish website Kimura.se is reporting that a match between former title challengers Alexander Gustafsson and Glover Teixeira is being setup by UFC officials.

Alexander Gustafsson (16-3 MMA) was last seen in action at January’s ‘UFC on FOX 14’ event in Sweden, where he suffered a first-round TKO loss to Anthony Johnson in front of a sold out home crowd. Meanwhile, Glover Teixeira (22-4 MMA) will be looking to snap the first 2-fight losing skid of his career when he faces Gustafsson this June. Teixeira was most recently seen in action at October’s UFC 179 event, where he suffered a unanimous decision loss to Phil Davis. Prior to that, Glover had suffered a 5-round beatdown at the hands of current UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones at UFC 172 in Baltimore.

UFC Fight Night 69 takes place June 20 live from 02 World Berlin Arena in Germany.
