UFC officials recently announced that a light heavyweight title fight between current champ Jon “Bones” Jones (19-1 MMA, 13-1 UFC) and challenger Glover Teixeira (22-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC) will headline the UFC 171 event, set for March 15 in Dallas, Texas.

UFC light heavyweight kingpin Jon “Bones” Jones is coming off a “Fight of the year” performance opposite challenger Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson at September’s UFC 165 event in Toronto. Jones defeated the tough Swede via decision that evening, which marked his sixth-straight title defense, making him the most dominant light heavyweight of all-time, at least statistically.

Prior to his defeat of Gustafsson, Jones had scored victories over a handful of former UFC champions, including Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Rashad Evans and Lyoto Machida respectively.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian Bomber, known as Glover Teixeira, earned himself #1 contender status after scoring a TKO win over perennial contender Ryan Bader in September. The victory over Bader was Glover’s fifth inside the octagon, and extended his current win streak to 20 in a row.

Glover also holds notable wins over James Te Huna, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Fabio Maldonado and Kyle Kingsbury while under the Zuffa banner.

A key welterweight contest was also announced for the 171 card, as former Strikeforce title holder, Jake Shields (29-6-1 MMA, 4-2 UFC) will take on former Bellator strap holder Hector Lombard (33-4-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC).

The former Bellator middleweight champion, Lombard, is coming off a KO victory over former Strikeforce welterweight champ Nate Marquardt at UFC 166 in Houston. The fight was Lombard’s first at 170-pounds, as he decided to make the cut from 185 following split-decision losses suffered to opponents Tim Boetsch and Yushin Okami.

Meanwhile, former Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields is coming off his second-straight split-decision victory, the latest which he earned agaisnt Demian Maia in Brazil. Prior to that, Shields earned another split-decision win over Tyrone Woodley at the UFC 161 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

UFC 171 now includes the following contests:

  • Champ Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixeira – UFC light heavyweight title fight
  • Hector Lombard vs. Jake Shields
  • Ovince St. Preux vs. Thiago Silva
  • Bubba McDaniel vs. Tor Troeng

According to ‘The Telegraph,’ UFC light heavyweight contender, Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson (15-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC), will still headline the UFC’s return to London this March, now opposite undefeated slugger Jimi Manuwa (14-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC).

Gustafsson was originally slated to face Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in the evenings main event, but “Lil Nog” was forced to withdraw from the fight due to a lingering back injury.

Since turning pro in 2008, Jimi Manuwa has been on a terror, going a perfect 14-0, with all 14 victories coming by form of stoppage. The “Poster Boy” was last seen in action at October’s “UFC Fight Night: Munoz vs. Machida” event in London, where he earned a second-round TKO victory over Canadian Ryan Jimmo.

Prior to the bout with Jimmo, Manuwa had scored TKO wins over Cyrille Diabate and Kyle Kingsbury respectively. The London-based fighter could rocket to the top of the UFC’s light heavyweight division with a win over Gustafsson this March.

Meanwhile, Alexander Gustafsson is coming off a “Fight of the year” performance opposite champion Jon “Bones” Jones at September’s UFC 165 event in Toronto. Unfortunately for fans of “The Mauler,” the powerful Swede came out on the losing end of the judges decision that evening. Prior to the Jones loss, Gus had strung together 6 straight victories inside the octagon, including wins over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Thiago Silva and James Te-Huna.

Gustafsson vs. Manuwa is set for March 8 live from the O2 Arena in London, England. Be sure to catch this awesome fight live at Kalapaki Joe’s this March!

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (21-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC) was expected to face Alexander Gustafsson (15-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) at London’s O2 Arena on March 8, 2014.

However, according to MMA Fighting, a lingering back injury will prevent “Lil Nog” from competing in the proposed headliner opposite “The Mauler.”

Since joining the UFC ranks, Nogueira has pulled out of a handful of fights due to injuries. The 37-year-old has not fought since UFC 156 in February, where he earned a unanimous decision victory over former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans.

Meanwhile, Alexander Gustafsson is coming off a “Fight of the year” performance opposite champion Jon “Bones” Jones at September’s UFC 165 event in Toronto. Unfortunately for Gustafsson fans, the powerful Swede came out on the losing end of the judges decision that evening. Prior to the Jones loss, Gus had strung together 6 straight victories inside the octagon.

A new opponent for Gustafsson has yet to be named by UFC officials. Stay tuned to Kalapaki Joe’s for further updates.
