Daniel Cormier suffered the first knockout loss of his professional career at last night’s UFC 214 event in Anaheim, California.

“DC” was stopped by Jon Jones in the third-round of their event headlining fight, surrendering his UFC light heavyweight title in the process.

One day removed from the emotional setback, Daniel Cormier took to Instagram where he issued the following statement to his fans while congratulating Jon Jones on his victory.

“First off, thank you all for the kind words. I have felt the support. Congratulations to Jon Jones and his team. They did a phenomenal job and got the victory. Also, to Big John McCarthy, I would like to apologize for acting up with you. I am thankful for the time you gave me to try and defend myself and stay in the fight. You are the best in the business for a reason. I also wanna thank my team and my coaches. I love you all from the bottom of my heart. Your time and energy is greatly appreciated. Jon Jones reclaimed the UFC light heavyweight championship at last night’s UFC 214 event in Anaheim, this after scoring a third-round TKO victory over Daniel Cormier in the evenings main event.

After two closely contested rounds, “Bones” was able to find a home for a crushing head kick early in round three which left Cormier staggered and on wobbly legs. Jones would immediately rush after “DC” and get him to the octagon canvas where he proceeded to unleash some brutal ground and pound which forced the referee to step in and call a stop to the action.

The highly anticipated rematch between former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and current division title holder Daniel Cormier will go down at UFC 214 in Anaheim, California.

The bitter rivals, Jones and Cormier, joined UFC on FOX commentator Brian Stann during last night’s broadcast to discuss their upcoming fight, check it out.

Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier first met at UFC 182 in January of 2015 with “Bones” emerging victorious by unanimous decision.

Jones will enter this contest having not fought since April of 2016. Originally, “Bones” most recent fight was supposed to pit him against the champ (Cormier).

However, when Cormier was forced out of the fight an injury, Jones battled Ovince St. Preux for interim gold, winning the fight with an insipid unanimous decision.

Jones is currently riding a thirteen-fight win streak which includes victories over former champions Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans and Vitor Belfort.

As for Cormier, “DC” was last seen in the cage in early April, when he defended his title with a second-round submission victory over feared knockout artist Anthony “Rumble” Johnson.

In his next most recent fight, which occurred in July of 2016, he was originally expected to fight Jon Jones, but ultimately fought and defeated Anderson Silva in a last-minute non-title fight, this after Jones was forced off the card after failing a drug test.

Before defeating Silva, Cormier defended his title with a hard-fought decision defeat of Alexander Gustafsson, and won the title Jones had left vacant with a submission defeat of “Rumble” Johnson.

After watching the above interview, who do you think has the mental edge going in to next weekend’s UFC 214 main event?

Dana White has a backup plan for Daniel Cormier if Jon Jones is not ready to fight at UFC 214

Dana White has a backup plan for Daniel Cormier if Jon Jones is not ready to fight at UFC 214

Earlier tonight UFC president Dana White went on Sports Center where he announced that if Jon Jones is ready, the promotion is willing to give him an immediate title shot against current light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 on July 29 in Anaheim, California.

Jon Jones (22-1 MMA) and Daniel Cormier first met at UFC 182 in January of 2015, with “Bones” emerging victorious via unanimous decision.

“Bones” and “DC” were originally slated to rematch at UFC 197 in April of 2016, but Cormier was forced to pullout of the fight after suffering a knee injury.

The bitter rivals were then booked to fight at this past July’s UFC 200 event in Las Vegas. However, unfortunately for fight fans Jones was removed from the card just days before the event after testing positive for banned substances.

“Bones” is currently serving a one-year suspension that was handed down for his aforementioned failed drug test. The suspension comes to an end the first week of July.

If Jon Jones decides that he will not be ready to fight Cormier at UFC 214 on July 29, or if “Bones” opts to take a tune-up fight instead, Dana White told ESPN that the promotion already has a backup plan set for “DC”.

“Cormier is available to fight on July 8, but that timeframe doesn’t work for Jon Jones,” White said. “Cormier already told me he’s willing to fight either Jones or Manuwa.”

The UFC president continued.

“If Jon Jones is ready to fight [by UFC 214] on July 29, we’ll see the Jones versus Cormier rematch, finally.”

Dana White is not sure how this whole situation will play out, but the ball is in Jones’ court.

Jimi Manuwa Daniel Cormier

If Jones does turn down the fight offer for UFC 214 in Anaheim, “The Poster Boy” told Dana White that he would be more than happy to test Cormier’s chin this July.

“Jimi wants Cormier,” White said. “They got into it at UFC 210 [earlier this month] and Jimi told me he’s never been talked to like that before. We’ll see how this plays out.”

Who would you rather see Daniel Cormier fight next, Jon Jones or Jimi Manuwa?
