Lyoto Machida vs. Luke Rockhold headlines UFC on FOX 15 in Newark

The UFC’s return to New Jersey now has a main event, as UFC officials announced today that middleweights Lyoto Machida and Luke Rockhold will headline April’s “UFC on FOX 15” event in Newark.

Rockhold was the first to announce the five-round main event booking, this via his official Instagram feed.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida (22-5 MMA) was most recently seen in action at last month’s UFC Fight Night event in Brazil, where he scored a first-round TKO victory over C.B. Dollaway. That win got “The Dragon” back in to the win column, as he had previously been defeated by current UFC middleweight champ Chris Weidman in the main event tile fight of July’s UFC 175 card in Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, former Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold (13-2 MMA) will be looking to extend his current win streak to 4 when he faces Machida this April. Rockhold’s most recent octagon appearance came against bitter rival Michael Bisping, whom he defeated by second-round submission in the main event of November’s UFC Fight Night event in Australia.

UFC on FOX 15 takes place April 18 live from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. The main card will air on FOX after prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman (12-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) has been forced out of his scheduled UFC 181 title fight with Vitor Belfort (24-10 MMA, 13-6 UFC).

UFC officials broke the news yesterday, stating that Weidman had suffered a broken hand in training.

Weidman was last seen in action at July’s UFC 175 event in Las Vegas, where he earned a hard-fought unanimous decision win over former light heavyweight champion Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida.

Meanwhile, Vitor Belfort hasn’t stepped foot in the octagon since scoring a knockout win over Dan Henderson in November of 2013. The former UFC champion has won 3 fights in a row, with all three wins coming by head-kick knockouts.

UFC president Dana White announced on twitter that the Weidman vs. Belfort fight will now take place in February 2015.

A key middleweight bout between Lyoto Machida (21-5 MMA, 13-5 UFC) and C.B. Dollaway (15-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC) will take place at December’s ‘UFC Fight Night 58’ in Brazil.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion, Lyoto Machida, was last seen in action at July’s UFC 175 event in Las Vegas, where he suffered a hard-fought unanimous decision loss to current middleweight champion Chris Weidman. Prior to the setback, “The Dragon” was coming off back-to-back wins which he earned over Mark Munoz and Gegard Mousasi.

Meanwhile, C.B. Dollaway has won 4 of his last 5 octagon appearances, his latest being a decision win over Francis Carmont which earned him a “Performance of the night” bonus. The former TUF Season 7 runner-up will undoubtedly be facing his toughest opponent to date when he squares off with Machida in Brazil.

UFC Fight Night 58 takes place December 20 live from Jose Correa Arena in Barueri, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The card is expected to air in the US on FOX Sports 1.
