Packers B.J. Raji out for season with torn bicep

Packers B.J. Raji out for season with torn bicep

The Green Bay Packers lost a major part of their defense over the weekend, as ProBowl nose tackle B.J. Raji suffered a torn right bicep against the Oakland Raiders on Friday night.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport broke the news on Saturday that the 2009 draft pick would miss the entire 2014 regular season.

The 28-year-old had signed a 1-year $4 million contract with the Packers this offseason.

Raji’s on field play had began to diminish in recent years, but the Packers were still counting on having him clog up the middle in their defensive scheme.

Without Raji, Green Bay will turn to second-year pro Josh Boyd and rookie Mike Pennel to fill in the void.

Rams QB Sam Bradford tears ACL, will miss entire 2014 season

Rams QB Sam Bradford tears ACL, will miss entire 2014 season

St. Louis Rams fans received the worst news possible on Sunday afternoon. As an MRI confirmed that Rams starting quarterback Sam Bradford had in fact suffered a torn ACL from a hit he received Saturday night in a preseason victory over the Cleveland Browns.

St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fischer confirmed the extent of the injury to ESPN:

“We lost our quarterback,” Fisher said. “For Sam, it was devastating.”

Bradford, the first overall pick in the 2010 draft, will likely miss the entire 2014 season with the injury.

Sam suffered the same injury in the same knee October of last season, causing him to miss the remaining 9 games.

In four years in the NFL, Sam has missed a total of 15 regular season games due to injury.

Backup quarterback Shaun Hill will likely be promoted to starter, unless the team can trade or sign a new QB in the next few days.

Matt Cassel named Vikings starter for Week 1

Matt Cassel named Vikings starter for Week 1

Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer announced today that Matt Cassel will be the starting quarterback when the team faces the St. Louis Rams in Week 1 of the NFL regular season.

The veteran quarterback, Cassel, was able to fend off young Vikings rookie Teddy Bridgewater for the starting role.

Bridgewater was selected by Minnesota with the 32nd overall pick in this year’s draft and has played pretty well for the team thus far in preseason action, throwing for 4 touchdowns and no interceptions.

However, Matt Cassel has played equally well and perhaps a little more consistent than the Vikings future franchise quarterback so far this preseason, thus earning the teams starting position under center… At least for now.

Having two players excelling at the quarterback position is usually a welcomed problem for any NFL franchise.

We will see how it affects the Minnesota Vikings this season.
