Dana White: Hendricks not MacDonald to get next shot at Lawler

Dana White: Hendricks not MacDonald to get next shot at Lawler

UFC President Dana White confirmed today that the promotion has decided to do a trilogy bout between current UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler and former title holder Johny Hendricks.

Prior to their second fight at December’s UFC 181 event, it was thought that the winner of “Hendricks vs. Lawler 2” would face Canadian welterweight standout Rory MacDonald next.

Instead, due to yet another controversial judges decision, the UFC has opted for a trilogy bout to finally settle the score:

“Robbie and Rory just fought,” White said. “We just feel like the trilogy makes sense – to do the third fight with these two.”

Lawler defeated MacDonald via split-decision at the UFC 167 event in November of 2013.

With the news, the door is now open for Rory MacDonald to possibly replace the injured Tarec Saffediene in the headlining bout of “UFC Fight Night 60” opposite Matt Brown.

Whether the UFC chooses to go that route (Brown vs. MacDonald) remains to be seen.

White did not give a date or location for the Hendricks vs. Lawler trilogy fight.

The “Ruthless One” defeated Hendricks via judges split-decision victory this past month in Las Vegas to earn the UFC’s coveted welterweight title.

Robbie Lawler is finally a UFC champion!

The “Ruthless One” scored a hard-fought split-decision win over Johny Hendricks in the main event of last weekend’s UFC 181 event in Las Vegas, thus becoming the promotions welterweight champ.

Just like their first contest, Lawler vs. Hendricks 2 was another close fight, leading many analysts and fans to believe that a trilogy bout (rubbermatch) could possibly be next for the pair of welterweight sluggers.

However, Canadian welterweight standout and Kalapaki Joe’s sponsored fighter Rory MacDonald may have something to say about that.

Following his victory over Tarec Saffiedine at UFC Fight Night 54, “Ares” was told by UFC officials that he would be the next fighter to challenge for 170-pound gold.

Like Hendricks, Rory also has a history with Lawler, as the young Canadian suffered a split-decision loss to “Ruthless” back at UFC 167 in November of 2013.

Since then, “Ares” has picked up 3 traight victories over Damian Maia, Tyron Woodley and the aforementioned Tarec Saffiedine.

Who would you like to see Robbie Lawler fight next?

A key welterweight bout between Kelvin Gastelum and Tyron Woodley will co-main event January’s UFC 183 event in Las Vegas.

UFC officials announced the booking yesterday.

Undefeated welterweight Kelvin Gastelum (10-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) was most recently seen in action at this past weekend’s UFC 180 event in Mexico, where he scored a first-round submission victory over Jake Ellenberger. That victory earned Gastelum a “Performance of the night” bonus and extended his undefeated streak to ten.

Meanwhile, Tyron Woodley (14-3 MMA, 4-2 UFC) is coming off a first-round TKO victory over Dong Hyun Kim, which he earned at August’s UFC Fight Night event in Macau, China. Prior to that, “T-Wood” suffered a tough decision loss to Canadian standout Rory MacDonald at June’s UFC 174 event in Vancouver.

UFC 183 takes place January 31 live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event is headlined by a middleweight bout featuring former UFC champion Anderson Silva taking on former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz.
