NFL Wild Card Weekend Preview: Detroit Lions vs. Seattle Seahawks

By: Chris Taylor (Kalapaki Joe’s Staff Writer)

Despite losing to the Green Bay Packers in the final game of the NFL’s regular season, the Detroit Lions (9-7) were able to secure the NFC’s final playoff spot due to a Washington Redskins loss.

Detroit will now travel to Seattle where they will do battle with both the Seahawks and their rowdy fans on Saturday night.

After putting together an impressive five game win streak to bring their overall record to 9-4, the Lions have now lost three straight games heading in to Wild Card Weekend.

The Lions suffered losses to fellow NFC playoff teams the New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys and aforementioned Green Bay Packers during that stretch.

Scoring will not come easy in Seattle as the Seahawks defense seems to thrive in front of their home crowd.

Detroit will need their quarterback Matt Stafford to have a great game with no turnovers if they hope to pull out the upset in Seattle.

Stafford had a solid year for the Lions this season throwing for 4,327 yards and 24 touchdowns against just 10 interceptions.

The Lions will need big plays from their receivers, including Golden Tate who will return to Seattle and face off with his former teammates.

Running the ball will not be easy for Detroit, but they will need to figure out a way so that Stafford gets some time to throw in the pocket.

Meanwhile, the Seattle Seahawks (10-5-1) clinched the NFC West title once again this year but it was not easy.

Seattle has had their fans on a rollercoaster ride for most of the season and will now look to find some balance in their play in this year’s NFL playoffs.

Seattle has alternated between wins and losses over the last seven weeks.

In week 17, the final week of the regular season, they picked up a 25-23 road victory over the 49ers.

The Seahawks will need their franchise quarterback Russell Wilson to play at his very best on Saturday night and it would go a long way in helping if the team could solidify a run game against a tough Lions defense.

On the opposite side of the football Seattle is dealing with some injuries, however at home it is hard to bet against the Seahawks defense.

With that said, I predict the Seattle Seahawks will defeat the Detroit Lions by a final score of 28-17 this weekend.

Marshawn Lynch announces NFL retirement!

While everyone was expecting Peyton Manning to make retirement headlines following his victory at Super Bowl 50, it was Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch who stole the headlines.

“Beast Mode” took to twitter Sunday night where he simply tweeted a peace emoji and a picture of his cleats suspended from a telephone wire.

Although Lynch made no official statement on the matter, his agent and Seahawks owner Paul Allen acknowledged his departure from the game on Monday.

Lynch won a Super Bowl with the Seahawks 3 years ago when the squad demolished this year’s Super Bowl champion the Denver Broncos.

Lynch will go down in history as one of the toughest and most durable backs in NFL history.

During his nine-year NFL career, Lynch accumulated 9,112 yards rushing to go along with 74 touchdown scores.

Seahawks defeat Vikings, will play Panthers next round!

The Seattle Seahawks defeated the Minnesota Vikings by a final score of 10-9 on Sunday and will now travel to Carolina to battle the Panthers this weekend (Jan 17) in the NFL playoffs divisional round.

The Vikings carried a 9-0 lead in to the games fourth quarter on Sunday before Russell Wilson found Doug Balwdin for Seattle’s first score of the game.

On the next possession, Minnesota would hand the ball off to former NFL MVP Adrian Peterson who was stripped by Hawks safety Cam Chancellor, a fumble the Seattle defense recovered.

Seattle would post a field goal off of the “AP” turnover and took the lead 10-9.

The Vikings would get one last chance to have the ball on offense with two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Second-year QB Teddy Bridgewater would lead the Vikings in to Seattle territory and set up his kicker Blair Walsh with what appeared to be a gimme 27-yard field goal.

Unfortunately for Vikings fans, Walsh pulled the kick left, breaking the hearts of all Vikings fans in the process.

After earning the thrilling victory over Minnesota, Seattle has now advanced to play the Carolina Panthers next Sunday in the divisional round.

The Seattle Seahawks (9-5) clinched an NFC Playoff Berth on Sunday afternoon by defeating the Cleveland Browns (3-11) by a final score of 30-13 at CenturyLink Field.

Seahawks star quarterback Russell Wilson completed 21 of 30 pass attempts on Sunday afternoon for a total of 249 yards and 3 touchdown scores.

Seattle running back Christine Michael carried the ball 16 times for a total of 84 yards in place of the injured Marshawn Lynch.

The win marked Seattle’s fifth-straight victory and guaranteed the team an NFC Wild Card berth.

The Seahawks will play hosts to division rivals the St. Louis Rams and Arizona Cardinals in their final two games of the 2015 regular season.

Seattle lost to both teams (The Cards and Rams) in their first division meetings earlier this season.
