UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley will attempt to make his first title defense at UFC 205 in New York this November when he squares off with top contender Stephen Thompson.

Woodley earned the 170-pound title at UFC 201 in Atlanta after scoring a brutal first-round knockout victory over former champ Robbie Lawler.

Meanwhile, “Wonderboy” is currently riding an impressive seven-fight win streak, his latest victory coming over former title challenger Rory MacDonald in June. Prior to that, Thompson had knocked out former champ Johny Hendricks in the very first-round.

Tyron Woodley: “Wonder Woman” Thompson can go fight Lawler

Tyron Woodley became the UFC’s undisputed welterweight champion at UFC 201 in Atlanta by scoring a first-round knockout win over Robbie Lawler.

Since then there has been much debate as to who Woodley should be fighting in his first title defense.

UFC president Dana White has stated that number one contender Stephen Thompson would be the first man to challenge Woodley for the belt, but “The Chosen One” says he has not signed any contract to fight “Wonderboy” and really has no interest in that fight at this time.

Tyron Woodley was asked to address the fact that fans are saying that he is ‘ducking’ Thompson during an interview the “Morning Wood w/ Deez Nuts” podcast:

“Stevey Wonder Woman Thompson specifically said that I was not going to win the fight (with Lawler). And he said that he thought the fans would rather watch him and Robbie fight because it was the more exciting fight. He said that I didn’t deserve it (the title shot) that I had been waiting on it while you’ve been active. You also went even further to say that I fade in later rounds and that Robbie comes on stronger in those rounds and that you just couldn’t see me getting it done so you looked forward to fighting Robbie. Well, your mouth wrote a check that your ass couldn’t cash so now you can go and fight Robbie!”

What do you think of Woodley’s remarks?

Tyron Woodley realized his dreams at UFC 201, becoming the UFC welterweight champion of the world after knocking out Robbie Lawler.

Following the biggest win of his career, Woodley said that he was looking for big fights and called out Nick Diaz.

However, it looks like the UFC rankings will serve their purpose for the welterweight division’s next title fight as Dana White told UFC.com on Thursday that #1 ranked Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson will fight Woodley for the title next.

“I think that Nate feels his brother should have the fight at 170, but Nick is not going to come back and fight for the title right away,” White said.

“There are other guys deserving of a title shot. Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson is going to fight for the 170-pound title and then we’ll see what happens with Nick and Nate.”

Tyron Woodley realized his dreams on Saturday in Atlanta, Georgia when he defeated Robbie Lawler to become the UFC welterweight champion of the world.

Woodley said now that he is the champion, he is looking for the biggest fights possible to generate the most money and doesn’t care about what the rankings are saying.

“Nick Diaz is a top-five welterweight of all time in my eyes,” Woodley said at the post-fight press conference (transcribed by MMA Fighting). “Georges St-Pierre is the No. 1 welterweight in my eyes. If I’m an athlete in this sport, in this division and I want to say I’m the best in the world, I feel like I should compete against those guys. So I don’t feel any obligation to go by the rankings. We all know how those rankings are produced anyway. And I want to go out there and I want to fight the money fights.”

MMA Fighting reached out to Georges St-Pierre via text message on Sunday and asked if he would be interested in fighting the new welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. “Rush” simply replied, “Yes.”

Will we see Georges St-Pierre return to the Octagon to fight Tyron Woodley?
