A key middleweight bout between Gegard Mousasi and Ronaldo Souza headlines tonight’s “UFC Fight Night 50” event in Ledyard, Connecticut.
Kalapaki Joe’s sponsored fighter, Gegard Mousasi (35-4-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC), was last seen in action in the main event of “UFC Fight Night 41” in Berlin, where he earned a dominant first-round submission victory over Mark Munoz. Prior to that, “The Dreamcatcher” was coming off a unanimous decision loss to former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza’s (20-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC) most recent octagon appearance came at the “UFC Fight Night 36” event in Brazil, where he earned a unanimous decision win over Francis Carmont. Prior to his victory over Carmont, the former Strikeforce champion was coming off a TKO victory over former middleweight #1 contender Yushin Okami.
Mousasi and Souza first met at “Dream 6” in September of 2008, with Mousasi earning a first-round KO to become the now defunct organizations inaugural middleweight champion.
The evenings co-main event features a heavyweight showdown between former Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem and “Big” Ben Rothwell.

Former UFC Bantamweight Champion Renan Barao (32-2 MMA, 7-1 UFC) has been forced out of his scheduled UFC 177 main event title fight rematch with T.J. Dillashaw.
The news came just prior to yesterdays weigh ins, when ‘Globo’ (A Brazilian News Outlet) reported that Barao had fallen ill during the weight cutting process and would be unable to compete at tonight’s event in Sacramento.
The UFC moved quickly to find a replacement for tonight’s main event fight and were successful when UFC newcomer, Joe Soto, accepted the opportunity to challenge for the coveted bantamweight title.
Joe Soto (15-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) is the former Bellator Featherweight Champion and current Tachi Palace Fight Bantamweight Champion. “One Bad Mofo” has won six straight fights ahead of tonight’s main event bout with UFC Bantamweight Champ T.j. Dillashaw (10-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC).

“The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung (13-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) has been forced out of his scheduled “UFC Fight Night 53” co-main event bout with Akira Corassani (12-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC), this according to his agent Brian Rhee.
Rhee told Kalapaki Joe’s Chris Taylor that “shoulder issues” were to blame for KZ’s decision to withdraw from the fight and added that he was hopeful that Jung may be able to return to action before the end of the year.
“The Korean Zombie” suffered a TKO loss (shoulder injury) to Jose Aldo in his last octagon appearance at August of 2013’s UFC 163 event in Brazil. That injury required Chan to undergo surgery and he has been on the shelf ever since the operation.
Prior to his loss to Aldo, Jung had strung together three-straight octagon victories over opponents Leonard Garcia, Mark Hominick and Dustin Poirier. “KZ” was awarded “Performance of the night” bonuses for all three of those wins.
With the news, Swedish featherweight fighter Akira Corassani is now without an opponent for the October 4 event which takes place at Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
The “UFC Fight Night 53” lineup now looks as follows:
• Gunnar Nelson vs. Rick Story
• Akira Corassani vs. TBA
• Jan Blachowicz vs. Ilir Latifi
• Niklas Backstrom vs. Mike Wilkinson
• Scott Askham vs. Magnus Cedenblad
• Nico Musoke vs. Alexander Yakovlev
• Dennis Siver vs. Robert Whiteford
• Cathal Pendred vs. Gasan Umalatov
• Marcin Bandel vs. Mairbek Taisumov
