A five-round middleweight contest will headline January’s UFC 183 event in Las Vegas, as UFC officials announced yesterday that former 185-pound champion Anderson Silva (33-6 MMA, 16-2 UFC) will meet former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz (26-9 MMA, 7-6 UFC) in the evenings main event.

UFC President Dana White made the announcement, and had the following to say about the January 31st fight:

“The fight that the fans have been waiting for, the fight that the fans have been screaming for … we have made Anderson Silva vs. Nick Diaz, Jan. 31 in Las Vegas,” White said while on ESPN’s “SportsCenter.” “It will be the main event, and it will be five rounds.”

Anderson Silva will fight for the first time since suffering a brutal leg break in his December 2013 rematch with current UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman. The 39 year-old has made an incredible recovery from the injury and will be looking to return to his winning ways when he faces Diaz this January.

Meanwhile, Nick Diaz hasn’t stepped foot in the octagon since a March of 2013 championship loss to former UFC title holder Georges St. Pierre. The native of Stockton, California, has not won a fight since October of 2011, when he defeated B.J. Penn via unanimous decision at UFC 137 in Las Vegas.

UFC 183 takes place January 31st (Superbowl Weekend) in Las Vegas, Nevada. A venue for the event has yet to be named.
