Alexander Gustafsson (16-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) has been forced to pull out of his scheduled UFC 178 title fight rematch with Jon Jones due to an injury he suffered in training. Details regarding the severity of that injury have not yet been released to the media.

What we do know is that the man replacing Gustafsson against Jones will be the undefeated Daniel Cormier (15-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC). The former Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix winner was most recently seen in action at May’s UFC 173 event in Las Vegas, where he absolutely dismantled Dan Henderson on route to a third-round submission victory. Cormier has gone 2-0 since making the drop from heavyweight to 205 pounds.

Meanwhile, current UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones (20-1 MMA, 14-1 UFC) has now defended his title 7 consecutive times, this since he defeated Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128 in March of 2011 to earn the gold. “Bones” most recent title defense came at April’s UFC 172 event in Baltimore, where he battered Glover Teixeira for five rounds to score the unanimous decision victory.

UFC 178 takes place September 27 live from the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
