UFC lightweight champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis has a date for his first-ever title defense set, as he recently confirmed on The MMA Hour that he will be going toe-to-toe against Gilbert Melendez on December 6, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The event (expected to be UFC 181) will likely be a pay-per-view, but Anthony did not say if his title fight will be headlining the show.
“Showtime’s” last octagon appearance came in August of 2013 at UFC 164, where he dethroned Benson Henderson via first-round submission to become the UFC’s lightweight champion.
Meanwhile, Gilbert Melendez was most recently seen in action at October’s UFC 166 event, where he earned a unanimous decision win over Diego Sanchez in a fight of the year performance. Prior to that, “El Nino” had lost a close split-decision to then UFC lightweight champ Benson Henderson.
Pettis and Melendez are currently serving as opposing coaches on Season 20 of TUF (The Ultimate Fighter).
