The defending Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots suffered a major blow on Monday when league officials announced that their star quarterback Tom Brady has been suspended without pay for the first four games of the 2015-2016 season.
Brady was suspended for violating the NFL policy of the integrity of the game. The Pats organization was also fined $1 million and will be forced to forfeit a 2016 first-round draft pick as well as a 2017 fourth-round draft pick in the future.
The harsh punishment was handed down less than a week after independent investigator Ted Wells found that it was “more probable than not” that Tom Brady was at least “generally aware of the inappropriate activities” regarding the deflation of the Patriots balls during the AFC Championship Game against the Colts.
New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft made a strong statement opposing the leagues punishment:
“Despite our conviction that there was no tampering with footballs, it was our intention to accept any discipline levied by the league,” Kraft said. “Today’s punishment, however, far exceeded any reasonable expectation. It was based completely on circumstantial rather than hard or conclusive evidence.”
Shortly after the punishment was laid down, Tom Brady’s agent announced that his client will be appealing the decision.
Do you think the punishment was fair without the NFL having any concrete evidence?
